Viktoria Lloyd-Barlow and Helen Heckety: Writing from Within

Be part of an inspiring and insightful discussion with Viktoria Lloyd-Barlow, whose debut novel All the Little Bird Hearts was longlisted for the 2023 Booker Prize. Viktoria studied at the University of Kent and has two first-class degrees and a PhD in creative writing. Like her protagonist Sunday, she is autistic.

Viktoria will be joined by Helen Heckety, a writer and performer from Faversham who has recently published her first novel Alter Ego, which she spoke about on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour. In it, the main character, Hettie, comes up with a plan to reinvent herself in a place that nobody knows her or her disability. A brave decision or one that will she will regret?

This event will explore the neurodivergent themes of Viktoria's novel, and the journey of both authors writing authentically from personal experience, as well as the broader landscape of contemporary literature.

Chaired by Chloe Timms, a writer (The Seawomen), disability campaigner, mentor, and podcast host from Birchington, Kent.

Hear from two remarkable authors who have made significant contributions to literature and disability advocacy. For those who are fans of contemporary fiction, interested in the intersections of disability and creativity, or simply curious about the journey of debut authors.
