    About the event

A chapel dedicated to St Thomas Becket in St Mary’s Church, Faversham, was once the site of an impressive scheme of medieval wall paintings that stretched across all three of its walls. Discovered under whitewash during Victorian renovations, and then hastily obfuscated by the large Victorian organ that was placed within the same chapel, the subject matter of these paintings challenges our understanding of the interconnectivity of the cults of St Thomas Becket and St Edward the Confessor in Kent.

Come and hear how Canterbury Cathedral, the Maison Dieu, Ospringe, and the patronage of King Henry III, influenced one medieval Faversham parishioner to commission a painted scheme of monumental images that have a direct correlation with imagery once found at Westminster Abbey and the Plantagenet court.
