Thus, private detective JT Ellington embarks on what should be a simple case in 1960s Bristol. All that's required is to track down a local doctor and retrieve a folder of stolen documents from him. For JT, however, life is rarely straightforward. The demons of his flawed past in Barbados still circle, refusing to be exorcised; his enemies pursue him as implacably and relentlessly as the devil himself.


And when he draws closer to the doctor, JT discovers that his reputation is dubious at best and in tatters at worst. In fact, Dr Fowler is hiding an extraordinary, illicit secret and, when he meets a sticky end outside a gangland pub, his dying words propel JT in search of a truth more disturbing and deadly than he could ever have imagined.
