Systematic synthetic phonics is a clear government priority in schools and initial teacher training. The importance of teachers' understanding of phonics is outlined in the 2012 Teachers' Standards. This text supports trainees to understand their level of knowledge of systematic synthetic phonics and to highlight any areas in which they need to know more. Throughout, self audits are accompanied by guidance on next steps to develop knowledge further and notes on application in the classroom. Through demonstrating to trainees how their training has developed their knowledge of phonics, this text helps them to build the confidence to begin teaching.
