It's the dead of winter 1965, and a young woman is missing without trace from the streets of Bristol. The police simply don't care: she's just one among many immigrants, an insignificant member of a Caribbean community who are all too often seen as 'trouble'; the fact she's not able to hear nor speak renders her yet more invisible.


Enter Joseph Tremaine 'JT' Ellington. Not long off the boat himself, JT is a Bajan ex-cop; a man with a tragic past and a broken heart. When local big shot Earl Linney hires him to track down the missing girl, JT is cast adrift in the murky waters of sex for sale, kidnapping and conspiracy. Linney is surely lying about his connections to the girl and other women are missing, too . . . But each clue that JT uncovers draws him deeper into a tangled web of vice.


Facing hostility and prejudice, as well as the demons he left home to escape, JT must navigate a seamy world of pubs, shebeens, brothels and nightclubs. Dangerous and unfamiliar, it's a world that could prove deadly.
