An ethnographic framework to describe the varying cultures of classrooms, teacher communities and student groups in different countries and educational contexts.

English language teaching methodology, which has been developed mainly in the English-speaking countries of the West, does not always fit the needs of the rest of the world. This book investigates this state of affairs by looking at the wider social influences on what happens between teachers and students in classrooms. It uses an ethnographic framework to describe the varying cultures of classrooms, of teacher communities and of student groups in different countries and educational contexts. It goes on to argue that these factors have to be acknowledged in the design and implementation of more appropriate teaching methodologies.
